BADLANDS
Photographs by Tomeu Coll
Synopsis

Synopsis
Just a few meters away from where the turbines of airplanes, crowded with tourists that
only search for sun and beaches, in the island of Mallorca, there is an area where nothing
seems to happen for more than a century. The stories from the inner lands of this island
float, like those of every suburb, apart from what seems important to the rest of the
world.
Badlands is more than the universe inside a photographer, it’s the news hidden in every
day’s sadness, the chronicle of the degradation of a beltway territory that is going
straight to desolation. Tomeu Coll has captured the unfathomable and almost unreal
territories of his island: Mallorca. A look at the rearview mirror to understand that all the
weirdness that surrounds him it’s also in his eyes.
The exhibition will also be the place to present the catalogue of the project, which have
been published by Kehrer Verlag & Institut d’Estudis Balearics.
Bio
Tomeu Coll, born in 1981.
Mallorca.
By defnition, an island makes us think of isolation.
Tomeu Coll comes from an island. His work investigation through photography was born
when he decided to try and understand the world from where he was standing, on an
island. He felt the need to experiment new aspects of isolation.
His documentary work was awarded on several occasions and was shown in many
institutions worldwide, such as the Aperture Gallery and at the National Gallery in New
York. He has been the recipient of several photography awards and was featured as an
Emerging Photographer by Smithsonian Magazine (USA) for his ongoing project
“Badlands”.
